SPEAKING UP TO SHATTER
THE DISCRIMINATION
|
|
|
Due to developments and events that have occurred
over the past years, we, the Sisters of the Sigma Alpha Nu Sorority, Manila
Chapter, would like to take this opportunity to voice out our grievances and
opinions towards a concern that has been plaguing the fraternity and sorority
community.
The entire fraternity and sorority community has been under scrutiny regarding
the violence that is constantly attached to the nature of our organizations.
This disparagement fraternities and sororities face occurs due to the very
presence of hazing in our community. Physical actions may be part of a
fraternity's or a sorority's initiation process because such acts are done for
the reason that it is in line with that organization's principles or beliefs.
These physical initiations are warranted. But once physical damage is inflicted
without justification, a line has to be drawn. That is how we, the sisters of
the Sigma Alpha Nu Sorority, Manila Chapter, define hazing-- the unjustifiable
and unnecessary infliction of physical harm. We condemn such acts, deeming them
unacceptable. Violence must never be an option. Violence must on no account be
tolerated.
We come to you now with the reality that hazing, unmerited violence, is very
much present in our community, and that a predicament comes with its very
presence. We, each and every fraternity and sorority, are now being judged and
now being frowned upon. Regardless of the fact that not all of us partake in
such actions, there is still discrimination.
Fraternities and sororities are then faced with a challenge: Do we fasten
ourselves with the pigeonhole people have placed upon us; or do we choose to
break out of the box and establish our discrepancy?
In whatever path we decide to take, only one thing is for certain, that every
action and decision each fraternity and sorority chooses to make, it will
reverberate. Everything that we choose to do will have an effect and create an
impact on the entire fraternity and sorority community, and the perception or
people around it. With this veracity, we are now obliged to take responsibility
for our actions. And with this in mind, we are taking a stand.
WE, THE SISTERS OF THE SIGMA ALPHA NU SORORITY, MANILA CHAPTER, DENOUNCE THE
VERY IDEA OF HAZING, BY OUR DEFINITION, AND WE ALSO WISH TO SHATTER THE NEGATIVE
JUDGMENT BESTOWED UPON OUR COMMUNITY.
We now call upon every fraternity and sorority to take a stand regarding this
issue, be it parallel to ours or dissimilar. The multiplicity of opinions we
will have concerning this matter will establish the diversity present in our
community, and the perceived homogenization is erroneous. We pose to you the
challenge of showing to everyone that these negative judgments of our community
are amiss.
We call upon every other organization, be it academic, religious, or otherwise,
and we call upon the unaffiliated students within or outside the University of
the Philippines, to also take your stands. We ask you to show the people that we
are all capable of addressing our own opinions. We ask you to voice out, because
it is time that we all make our voices heard.
